Would like to see the armchair critics do 4 laps against the riders they are slagging off - wonder if they could do any better ?

MBF u need to realise this topic was asking peoples views on the worst riders we have had. What u should remember is we PAY good money to watch these riders and are entitled to our opinions.

Riders do get support,i have put a lot of money into Speedway over the last forty years and got lots of sponsorship for Riders and the club,(if u are a regular that buys a programme you should have seen my name on numerous occasions thanking me for my support with sponsorship)what i am saying to you is that everyone deserves an opinion and whether you like it or not that is my opinion.

Would like to see the armchair critics do 4 laps against the riders they are slagging off - wonder if they could do any better ? the thread was started with a "bit of fun" in mind as not to much of that has been forthcoming of late and not to start a debate over who should say what about who and weather you can ride a speedway bike or not, take the thread in light heartedness as how its meant to be and not as a critism of a certain rider

Its funny but on the day i mentioned about Geoff Pusey it seemed Geoff didnt think supporters deserved an opinion hence an incident in Bellford chippy(which Tebbsy was involved in indirectly) On that day i was just about the only Boro fan NOT slating him but as i sort of stand out and was unlucky to be the ONLY Boro fan in the chippy at the time. Prior to that incident MBF after his fourth ride Geoff rode round to the back straight were most Boro fans were stood again i stayed silent and after Geoff singled out an elderly gent he chose me as his next target for abuse and he told me if i could do better then to climb over the fence and do so being a big lad that was never going to happen However I did point out to Geoff that I didnt have 10 years of sitting on a speedway bike so MBF some would like to of had a go but never had the Balls or in other cases cash to have a go but when somebody looks like he is not trying and is being overtaken by reserves who are months into their careers then questions will be asked. As I said I don't really like this thread and I and Geoff buried that years ago but the paying public are entitled to voice an opinion years later as long as you don't do it at teh time and bury that riders confidence I think nearly all mentioned have stopped riding so its not that big a deal.

Interesting thread depends on the definition of 'worst' - I remember one night at Peterborough Lars Munkedal was tailed off at the back he suddenly started doing wheelies whilst the race was still in progress. You really had to be there to believe it was happening!
Simmo mentioned Mick Conroy - he was an Aussie who came to us on-loan from Leicester. He would gate but by the second bend he would be stone last. He never learnt from this and was soon released and ended up at Weymouth.
Rusty Hodgson was put in the Redcar team far too early and wasn't really ready for a full season of Premier League racing. He had only rode a handful of meetings for the Cleveland Bays when he was offered the No.7 spot. He quickly began to lose confidence and would drive home and not touch his bike until the following Thursday. If he had been allowed a full season in the Conference League first we may have seen a different outcome.
I've never seen anyone go as slow as Martin Peterca went into the third bend at Cleveland Park.
Mike Beaumont was 29/30 when he joined us in 1976 and promoter Ron Wilson really built him up as both him and brother Richie were good on the grasstracks. However Mike never adjusted to speedway and as Simmo has recalled is best remembered for an on-track incident involving 'Millen the Villain'.
Worst riders for me were David Blackburn for doing the dirty on us at the beginning of the 1988 (?) season after Dicko had broken his elbow. We all got our revenge at the Fours when he lined up on parade and the Tigers fans shouted 'Judas' at him for moving to Glasgow for more money but not having the decency to tell us he had decided to move further north after turning up at Berwick with dirty equipment. He looked really embarrassed at the massed chanting of 'Judas'. Totally deserved IMO.
The other one was Dave Gatenby who had broken his leg at Newport whilst riding for Halifax in 1976. The former Sunderland rider was signed to replace No.1 and captain Alan Emerson for the 1978 season. It soon became evident that Gatenby was never going to replace Emerson's high scores. Indeed if memory serves correct it took him two months to win a race and that night he had nitro instead of methanol in his tank!

As we are all having some fun with this I would have to nominate a certain DAZ SUMNER when riding further than 3 foot off the white line. A brilliant white line rider but any further than 3 foot off that line i have never seen anyone so scared.

Both Daz and Andy Sumner now run a garage near me in Stockport. I remember as a kid visiting my Nan and I'd see the 2 of them over the road working on their bikes.

i think the worst ones are those who seemed not to care or try - and in that case i nominate Bob Jameson.
